I had the same problem with some hinges and window pulls. If they are just plated and not solid, I could not find any way other than chemically stripping them. This solution actually worked pretty well, although not at all fun. I tried to polish them up on a bench grinder with a buffing wheel and it just took the brass right off. Good luck!
