Cracks in plaster walls and ceilings...HELP Posted by AG on September 17th, 2003 05:05 AM

I just bought a ranch house built in 1957. The walls are made of plaster, but I'm not sure if the ceilings are plaster. When I moved in there was currently a long crack in the kitchen ceiling running from the front of the house to the back. There was another crack in the hallway ceiling, and a few vertical cracks in some of the walls. But since I've moved in a little over a year ago, I have noticed a new crack in the hall ceiling running parallel to the other crack, some new horizontal and vertical cracks in the plaster walls, and a diagonal crack on a wall above a doorway (don't know if this one is new or was once repaired. To sum up, I have the long crack in the kitchen ceiling, two bedrooms with cracks in the ceilings, the hallway ceiling has 2 cracks, all rooms have small areas of vertical- and/or horizontal cracks, the diagonal crack on the wall above a door in the dining room and another diagonal crack in the wall above a door in the kitchen. All of the cracks are hairline, except for on the kitchen ceiling which is a slightly bigger than hairline-size. By the way, in the basement, the concrete foundation also has hairline cracks, but one crack that concerns me runs diagonally and I've seen water leaking through the crack.
What do all of these cracks mean? The house is 46 years old, so is it normal or abnormal for a house of this age to have lots of cracks like this? Should I be concerned? The house has not been inspected in 15 years, by the way.
Please write with your opinions and advice. Thanks so much!
