Hardwood Floor Direction

I'm considering installing hardwood floors in my house. There are a few things that I am concerned with right now.

First, I have a slab-on-grade. I understand it is easier to install the pre-finished flooring in this situation (glue it down), but I am still leaning toward solid wood. No real reason other than personal preference.

In the case of solid wood tongue and groove flooring installation on a slab-on-grade, what options are available on the nailer (the wood you glue/anchor to the concrete for the hardwood to be nailed to). Can strips of ply or 1x be used, or is solid ply preferred?

Second, I'm having difficulty understanding the direction the flooring should be installed in, and don't know if there are any good "rules" to follow with respect to changing direction from room-to-room. For example, I have a hallway with a 90 degree bend in it. Would I:

Intersect the flooring at the 90 degree bend in a "mitered" fashion? Perhaps with a single strip of wood at a 45 degree angle separating the two directions? This would seem like the only logical thing for me to do, as continuing the course to the wall "through" the perpendicular segment of the hallway might look a bit odd.

I've got a dimensioned floor plan (in autocad) that I could PDF if anyone is interested in offering advice. I'm in the "planning" stage right now, and I don't intend to start this project very soon.

Thanks a bunch,
Vinnie
