purchasing an old farm (uninhabited for 8 yrs) Posted by Barbara on September 17th, 2003 06:17 PM In reply to Question about clearing land by Jennifer on October 7th, 1999 02:27 AM [Go to top of thread]
My husband & I are looking into purchasing 66 acres in upstate NY we don't have a clue as to what we are doing just know that we want it. The land has not been farmed for over 30yrs the property around the "house", that has been vacant for 8 years, is so over grown that you can not even approach the back. It is infested with poison ivy and junk (really old dishwashers, trailers, 2 falling down sheds) we don't know what to do about clearing this small portion of the property that is in desperate need of work. We are not made of money; especially with this proposed purchase we will be holding the purse strings extra tight for a while. I have been "web surfing" for 2 weeks trying to find help on how we could start the clearing ourselves, or at least find out who to ask and where to go to get estimates for help. This opportunity is to great to pass up we love the location and the rest of the land is absolutely beautiful, if over grown abit. Now that I have bored you to death our question is how do we work with the poison ivy? How do we level the land that has been previously plowed into 2-foot ruts? We fell in love with this place with all of its faults and hope to fix it all and move there some day in the future. The house itself was built in the early 1900's we don't have a date just yet but the foundation is solid even if the additions are falling off.. What should we look for in terms of fixing and rehabilitating this property? I do hope you can help us we are on the verge of closing this deal and really want to know what it will take to make this a dream come true. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Barbara McHugh
