faux finishes

I think that veneering the doors would be a terrifically difficult job. Visit a regular paint store and ask about faux finishes, particularly wood-graining techniques. They will have the materials,tools,and even "how to" pamphlets.Look up "faux finishes" on a good search engine(try metacrawler)
What you'd be doing is using 2 or 3(or more) colors of paint, with special application tools and techniques, to give your doors a simulated wood grain look
