Doug, it would help to know what you are working on. A bicycle with a lot of gear ratios is different from a machine tool type application for this issue. For a machine tool type application and for bicycle size chain, a common figure is 3/8" of deflection measured across a 12 span between the 2 gears. Lacking a manual on the equipment, I would kind of interpolate from there. Equipment with big, heavy steel chain working horizontally and very light and delicate instruments using brass or plastic chain will have very different requirements so it is difficult to be more specific. Be sure that your gears are flush and parallel. Again, depending on the requirements, a string line is a big help in set-ups.
