Let me clarify that last point. If you do this wiring without concern about the neutral wire, the fan frame metal parts could be hot. With a meter you could check that. Somehow get a grounded wire up near the fan and put a meter between that ground wire and the fan frame. If it reads line voltage, best to swap the wires.
