Dimmer for halogen light

I got a halogen fixture, it has 4 halogen light bulbs on it 50watt each. It has normal stranded wire attach to it with no ballast. When I hooked up a remote-control-dimmer to it, the dimmer doesn't work at all. I used a 14/2 solid bold cable connect between them, is that the problem? If not, what kind of dimmer I should use.
