acid cleaning

There are a number of commercial products on the market that utilize acids ranging from mild (oxalic or sulfomic) to very strong (HCl and phosphoric). I agree with Graham that phosphoric is effective, but use caution. This is one of the few acids that can etch glass. Use it in diluted form so that it barely fumes when applied, AND USE GLOVES AND GLASSES! If you find you cough when using the product, increase ventilation and consider using an acid mist respirator.

Odors are more of a problem with muriatic acid (HCl), but I use it because it cannot interact with the ceramic or porcelein. Acid cleaning will do a great job, but respect the material.
