Basement Subfloor - Is one required?

Hello,

I will be finishing my basement this winter and have been told that a subfloor would make for a much more resilient surface for installing carpet and vinyl flooring. I would like some input from others on the value of installing a subfloor in a basement. Is it worth the extra investment or not? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Thank you in advance for any assistance.
