active mold Posted by tomh on September 26th, 2003 09:59 AM In reply to Mold prevention by Mike on September 26th, 2003 06:42 AM [Go to top of thread]
The lower RH will prevent mold from spreading, and most materials will reach a lower moisture that prevent spread. But, you need to treat active mold growths that can remain dormant or in the spore state for many years. The treatment may range from applying disinfecting solutions on relatively impervious surfaces, to replacement of more heavily contaminated porous surfaces. In this case, the best solution may be to remove baseboard and make a straight cut along the wall above the mold, then replace the drywall and tape the new joint. This will allow you to inspect treat areas behind the wall for excess moisture and treat any mold with a weak bleach solution. It will ensure the source of mold growths is removed. If the mold can be washed off the surface with the bleach solution and brushing then that will suffice, otherwise, drywall is an easy replacement / repair.
If you have moisture intrusion behind the wall supporting mold growth, you will need to remove the wall and install a moisture barrier. The dehumidifier cannot dry out a wall with active infiltration. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
