white washed exterior brick

We own a large, old brick building in a residential neighborhood where many of the houses are painted brick, many with that whitewashed, weathered look where some of the brick shows through. We'd like to blend in and achieve that same look and have read that the way to do it is by applying a clear sealer followed by a watered down acrylic paint. Any experience or advice?
