Sower Tile Posted by BobF on September 28th, 2003 03:29 AM In reply to Shower tiles by Derek on September 27th, 2003 11:00 AM [Go to top of thread]
Neither will work any better than what you have. MR drywall, aka greenboard, is not satisfactory backing for tile in a shower since it is not waterproof. Don't treat this matter lightly; you could grow a mold colony that could destroy the place.
You need a moisture barrier like building paper and then 1/2" Hardibacker or Durock. Durock is very unpleasant to work with so I have stopped using it in favor of Hardibacker.
Best you let the framing dry out for a week to be sure you do not have a mold problem. I would spray with copper naphthanate to be sure it is safe. That stuff is toxic, so use care in working with it; it should be available at a home center.
Then once you have the backerboard in place, you can set the same tile, if you wish. There are a few significant factors to handle in this situation and I cover them in the tile topic on my website at www.bobf.info. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
