Install Stairway in 1890 house

Posted by stindel on September 28th, 2003 06:54 AM

Just purchased house built in 1890 which is in beautiful condition except the only means of going upstairs is a 24" wide stairway which you enter from the wraparound porch. Want stairs inside. Want to locate new stairway in front parlor, maybe incorporate existing stairway space somehow. Also want to leave georgeous chimney exposed on second floor. Half of 2nd floor was finished approx 1970. Want to also finish attic portion over the parlor (steep pitched roof, lots of capability). Do not want to compromise integrity of house or destroy the aesthetics of this wonderful historic home. Would appreciate comments/suggestions. Thx, Sue Tindel
