Sir/Maam

We requested Hardie board for our new home and after installation we find that caulk was not applied at the overlap of each board. The installation insturction states that at the butt joints application of caulk is optional, but the butt joint is not defined in the manual. Is the overlap of the boards considered the butt joint? If so, what are the long term ramifications of not applying the caulk here?

Thanks,

Concerned new home owner....Dawn Feagan
