Most gates are built as a frame and faced with boards. Including diagonal frame members helps prevent twisting and sagging. Use of metal corner bracing and a diagonal turnbuckle from the hinge top corner to the opening lower corner can allow for correction as the wood naturally settles. Hinges and latches are normally applied to the frame, not the facing. To attach to brick, you can either attach the hinges directly or use a piece of lumber to carry the hinges. In either case you will need lead masonry anchors, and must pre-drill the brick using a masonry bit.

Take a look at well constructed gates in the design scheme you are seeking for ideas, and add some of the reinforcing braces and turnbuckle cable to prevent sag.
