Don't waste you money on the special floor sqeaking kit and screws. You can do the same with the regular gold screws. The trick is to pound a nail through the carpet to find the joist. After joists are located, drive a three inch gold screw through the carpet until the head of the screw is about a 1/4 inch above the pile. What this does is the threads of the screw lock the joist and subloor together and keep them from moving which is where the squeaking is coming from. Stick a few screws in the area of the squeak to give the screws extra holding power. You can knock the heads off of the screws with a quick sideways blow. They break off at subfloor level and disappear. You save yourself a lot of money. It takes a certain technique to break the heads off but they do break off with one blow when you master it.
