Frank, I would also recommend you hire a structural engineer to do the calculating. I spent $400 for this service which included sketches. I still did the work but I think it was worth the cost to be sure things wouldn't fall down. (I didn't get a permit - but I have the calculations and photos just in case). Keep in mind that when removing a supporting wall, not only do you need a beam of sufficient strength to span the opening but you also need to consider how the concentrated loads at the ends of that beam will be carried down into the rest of the structure. I had to beef things up in the basement for this reason.
