I do not know how set you are on staining the windows, but you might want to check if it voids your warranty if you stain them.

I bought new windows from Home Depot--the 8500s; cannot remember the brand--but I seem to remember something in the paperwork that painting the frames would void the warranty--it was not important to me because I was not going to paint them anyway.

I just realized you probably have wood windows, so they would need staining --at least a coat of protection, but I am gonna post this anyway--my windows are vinyl.

When I stain, I usually almost always use a rag, then I brush or spray the polyurethane--very seldom do I use sanding sealer and spray Laquer.
