TV antenna

are there any restrictions on the length of antenna wire/cable? I'm going with a rooftop, but don't want to mount it on the house roof because I'm scared of height, but I could do our barn roof, which is shorter and less sloped, and about 90-100 feet from house, and already has coaxial cable running from there, to an interim phone pole, to the house. Also, does the coaxial cable deliver signals either way, or "one way" only--since the cable connecting the barn and house junctions at the bottom interim phone poll where the (unactivated) cable TV comes in and splits, one way to house, one to barn (I would join the barn and house wires and leave unattached the TV cable, if the antenna signal can be sent either way in a cable). (And don't tell me to just spend the $50/month on cable--what a rip!) Thanks
