Valve in Shower

Hoping that someone could help. I have a 3 knob shower system. Hot on left cold on right and the center knob switches the water flow from top to bottom. There are two problems. 1. When I turn the center knob counter clockwise in order to switch the flow from bottom to top, the valve does not completely switch and I get flow from both. 2. The hot knob will turn continuously counter clockwise. It never reaches the end. Can anyone help. I attmepted to take the center knob off in order to see if I could determin the problem, but it would not come off. I took out the screw but still did not want to come off.
