Your example was for installing all new drywall which makes taping 'easy'. In my case, I have a textured finished ceiling with a 1' x 1' square unfinished patch of drywall in place. What this means is that the unfinished drywall butts up against the finished textured ceiling. My question is how do I tape this? The tape would be half on the unfinished drywall and half on the textured ceiling which obviously won't work. Do I need to scrape off a one inch path from the textured ceiling so that the tape will then be flush on both surfaces? Or do I not need to use tape. What is the purpose of the tape anyway? Thanks...
