Furnace still smoking....Re: racoon?

I know now that it's definitely not dust being burned off. Turned the furnace/oil burner on again for about 5 more tries and smoke was pouring out of the furnace each time. Outside the house, we saw that the smoke was exiting the furnace flue.
An aquaintance from the fire dept. thinks the furnace may be smoking because it has been shut off all summer, and it is burning off oil that has collected, and this is what is causing the smoke. Does this sound like a plausible explanation what with all that smoke pouring from the furnace?
I don't have much experience with furnaces, and I've never seen that much smoke coming from a furnace before.
