Flooring

I'm no kind of handy/fix'it man. However...I have numerous indoor remodeling projects I'm planning to attack myself over these next winter months, and will need all kinds of help/advice/recommendation! Sure hope ya'll can offer me a lot of guidance.

My first project (which I've already begun) is to enlarge one of our bathrooms, by gutting the adjoining utility room that 'used' to house the hot water heater (which has since been removed and relocated "by a professional plumber"). I already have the room now gutted completely. Walls right down to the studs...ceiling right down to the upstairs joists...flooring ripped up down to the joists (looking at 'dirt' in the crawl space).

I have no idea of how to proceed from this point. Well...I mean, I know I want to get new flooring down first, before it gets much colder, as it is already pretty drafty.

What was down previously was (starting at the floor joists) tongue & grove (I 'think', 1/2"). On top of that, plywood (I 'think', 1/4"). On top of that, Padding, then carpeting.

I don't want to get toooooo fancy nor, toooooo costly but, I do of course want to do this properly. First I was considering just dropping a 3/4" plywood back down. Then, thought maybe I should go with 1" plywood. But I'm not certain exactly what I 'should' do. Bottom line...we won't be 'carpeting' it again. I believe we will do linoleum this time. I have no clue as to what thickness, what type, or even if I should be using, "plywood". Or, what 'linoleum' will adhere to properly.

I keep hearing the terms 'sub floor', then 'flooring'. Do I actually need 'two' layers as that suggests?

ALL comments/suggestion/advice/guidance/help most welcome! I at least need to get this floor issue completed quickly first.

Very much looking forward to, 'being bossed around and told what to do', lol.

Thank You,

Ron
