There is an answer, Joe, but I don't know how you will like it. The current thought on roofing felt is that it is only there to prevent water coming in before all the shingles are on the house. Therefore, you don't need it at all. For what it's worth, I don't know if I agree either but there are a lot of new houses being built without it.
