If I understand you correctly it sounds like you purchased a fan without a mounting support cover made for a sloped ceiling. Go to a fan store and see if you can purchase a mounting plate in the same finish that has an elongated slot that allows the fan rod to hang straight down. Otherwise, if the fan is new, take it back and get one made for a sloped ceiling. Hope this helps.
