Get a %RH meter. Your %RH should be less than 50%RH during the spring/summer and fall. Wal-Mart or Radio Shack for $15-$20. If you +55%RH, check your crawlspace for standing water, exposed earth, and open vents. Sump pump, plastic/concrete covering the earth, closing the vents that allow outdoor humidity into the crawlspace are the basics to stop moisture from entering. Also interior water leaks can contribute to the problem. After checking the above, investigate a dehumidifier large enough to reduce the inside humidity. Useally you need 1 pint of moisture removal per 20 sq.ft. of floor space. Check the EPA's web site for size and high energy efficiency.
