Cultured Stone Application

I am building a bar in my home and wanted to cover the base in cultured stone. In planning for the project I was told that I could forgo the chicken wire and scratch coat if I was to use the Hardi Plank Underlayment product. This is the 3x5 cement tile backer board.
Has anyone tried this? and if so how well did it work?
