Possiby a sewer ejector pump

Do you have (2) lines discharging from the sump pit? Is there any toilets or other fixtures dumping into this pit? If so....then it's not a sump pump for ground water, but a sewage pump. You can also discern from the pipe size leaving the pit. 1-1/4" is the norm for sump pumps and 2" is for ejectors. The lid on these have to be sealed tight and all orifices sealed. This may explain the odor.
