Cutting Door in Block Wall. Posted by Daniel E. Fall on October 9th, 2003 10:53 PM In reply to cutting doorway in concrete block by Randy on October 9th, 2003 10:10 AM [Go to top of thread]
I don't know that you need a reference text.
First of all, since it is a load bearing wall. Get a building permit and discuss your plan with a building official.
Newer block is much easier to work with than older style block (breaks easier).
There are a couple of ways you can do it, but neither of them are important yet.
First of all, recognize that a 1/4" thick or better metal lintel probably H shaped with 2 angles for strength would have headed off that doorway prior to applying the walls, floor loads, and roof loads. Removing the block underneath without appreciating this might end your life or cause a major disruption to the house above at best. House movers die each year in their profession. Whatever you do, realize the gravity of removing concrete bearing points, pun intended.
You'll need to determine whether you'll need to temporarily provide support to the area. Most cities have structural engineers, some might even be willing to advise a strategy or tell you NO.
If you'd like to discuss this further, repost with more details about your plan, and qualify your details with the plans about how you will provide the support and someone might be willing to help you further on the simpler details on how to take out the block.
