freezing septics

I also live in MN (central) and have a 25-yr-old septic system that will be retired in 2 yrs. when the City of St. Cloud hooks me up to the public sewer. What Red said is true BUT I and others in the area have had occasional freezing troubles during winters with little snow and very cold temps. Certainly putting some straw over things for insulation wouldn't hurt. When I have had freeze-ups, it's been very temporary (a day or so) when the mercury fell to -25 F and there was almost no snow cover. I've never felt the need to use straw or any other insulator, but others have.
