Well, square footage is length times width, but I realize that isn't the whole answer.
If I have a complex outline, I sketch it out and break it down to smaller areas. This is particularly true for roofing. Allow about 10% for end cuts, and even more if you have valleys and/or a hip roof.
For siding, figure it without deducting for doors and windows. That will give you some excess for cutting losses.
Facia board is usually dimensional lumber, something like 2x8. There you measure the length only. But you want to figure it in terms of even lengths that you will need for the job. If you have a length of 30', it will have to be two 16 footers. That is if there is a rafter you can splice on at the half way mark.
