Like many of you, I managed to 'put my foot down' while in the attic. I also have the 'swirl' type textured ceilings and after repairing the drywall, I ran into the same problem of recreating the texture.

After much research, I have found this ceiling texture goes by many names including "slap brush", "crows' feet", "panda paw" and "stomped ceiling". It is done by rolling joint compund or "mud" on the ceiling, then 'stomping' the ceiling with a special brush loaded with joint compound. I found nice "step-by-step" directions at www.mikebelldrywall.com/slapbrush.html.

The brush can be purchased at most profesional drywall or paint supply stores (got mine at Sherwin-Williams), don't expect to find them at Home Depot or Lowe's.
