Removing Wall Paper

We are planning on remodelling our kitchen and in doing so, we would like to take the wall paper down and just painted the wall afterwards without putting a new wall paper. I don't know whether the wall was primed when the old wallpaper was hanged.

I am concerned that it might be so difficult to take the wall paper down and damaged the drywall. Any expert advice?
