paint over stucco

My question is similar to DR's, who asked about painting over a color coat of stucco. My house is stucco (no color coat has ever been applied) but is in need of some repair and refinishing. There is mildew and staining, as well as some cracking. Stucco companies tell me it is bad to paint over stucco because it does not allow the stucco to "breathe," but their alternatives are much more expensive than painting. (A color coat of stucco or a product such as Texcoat or Liquid Stucco) Should I really be concerned about doing more harm than good over the long term if I paint? Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
