A polycarbonate, Lexan is one brand name, will be safer and expensive. The cost and less scratch resistance are the downsides. Replacement tempered glass will also be expensive so it's kind of up to you to determine if the replacement cost for either is justified. You may want to look at the cost of a comparable new table before you decide.
