Hardware to attached stair runners over a wall-to-wall carpet

Is there any special hardware or techniques to fasten a stair runner over wall-to-wall carpets?

Only thing that comest to mind is eye-screws through the wall-to-wall carpet and insert a painted metal rod through them. We don't need anything fancy.

Any ideas? We assume that any kind of caroet tape or staple will be ineffective
