You say you measured from the inside opening. The replacement window should fit inside the rough opening after the old window is removed, not inside the existing window opening. So first off, be sure you took the right measurement. Your 1960s window may be fastened to the house using a flange. The flange may be covered by siding making it difficult to remove.

I would suggest removing all case moldings and getting a good look at the construction of the existing window before finalizing your measurements. The entire window should be removed, jambs, sill and of course the body of the window and glass. At this point you will have the framed opening exposed. You will need shims to adjust the level and squareness of the window. Be sure to have a bubble level and square available to help install the new window correctly. It may attach using flanges, or it may attach directly through the side jambs. Not enough information here to know.

Take off the casing and post back with more info on what you are removing and how it is attached to the frame, and more details on the replacement. Do not install the window inside the old window jambs, stops and sill.
