I think you are going to have to use the "smelly stuff". If you use latex enamel, it will peel right off, so you have to use an oil primer first. But it would be more durable to just use oil enamel and be done with it.
The newer enamels dry faster and some smell less. If you are in the western states, find a Dunn-Edwards paint store. They have a new oil enamel that has less odor and dries faster. IMHO they are the leaders in paint technology currently.
