Restoring ceiling

Posted by Susan on October 24th, 2003 08:05 AM

This may be a dumb question, but I'm hoping maybe somebody can help me with this.

In my old farmhouse, the previous owner had put up ceiling tiles which I am now removing because most of them are stained or damaged. The original plaster ceilings underneath are in pretty good shape, with only minor taping and patching needed. Most of the rooms haven't been a major problem, but this room is different. Whoever installed the tiles used 1x4's nailed directly into the plaster ceiling with 3" nails every two feet or so. (This was the same idiot owner who glued foam-backed shag carpet to oak hardwood floors.) I've tried everything I can think of to remove these boards without doing too much damage to the original plaster ceiling but I'm not having much luck. Any suggestions?
