Refinishing an old upright

Many yrs ago, we were given an old upright, once a player piano, but converted to a piano.....many yrs ago.......here is my delimma: I would like to paint it, or something.....as it is so dark. Cannot strip it all.....as the sides were replaced with a veneer......which cannot be stripped......tried to, but it would not even scratch!!! Help!!! I would like to keep this monster piece, as it continues to have an excellent sound quality....in excellent condition!!!
