Had GE pink metal cabinets and had them spray painted by a professional who used something to remove any residue of polish or grease then sprayed them. The doors and drawers he took to his shop and did them there. Worked pretty well - although after a number of years there is some bleed through so the white isn't as bright white as it was when first done, but certainky better than the pink :-)
