renovating attic...where to begin?

hello! my husband and i want to make the attic into a bedroom and bathroom. There are two supporting posts in the attic, one is in the perfect location, the other is not!!! Anyway, we would like to move it a couple of feet. We had two people that build houses come look at it, one said it could be moved, the other said not to. Okay, so now what???? Who would really know for sure and what is their working title? Do I have to hire someone to figure this out for us? Also , we would like to put in a dormer. Do you have to have someone draw out the plans? We plan on doing everything by ourselves, except plumbing, and the dormer. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
