Removing paint from finished wood

I'm stripping an oak newel post of 2-3 layers of paint, while trying to preserve the finish underneath. It looks like some kind of varnish, although I'd guess it's at least 40 years old (and possibly as much as 80). Is there a safe way to do this with either a stripper or a heat gun?
