Make sure plumbing is not leaking and tub drains correctly. PLUMBERS RUIN REGLAZED TUBS!
1. Have your customer remove all articles from room (towels, pictures, toiletries ect). Articles in cabinets are ok.
2. Check your ventilation. Make sure window opens or inspect your path to set up ventilation hoses to rout fumes. Set up your ventilation and start it up.
* This is a good time to walk through the job with the customer, explaining the process to them and showing them how you will be protecting their home as you are working.
3. Remove trim plumbing that is in or too close to the tub (normally over flow cap and spout). In rare cases if the toilet is too close to the tub it may have to be removed to have axcess to the front of the tub.
4. Remove what ever borders the tub around all of its borders (caulking and grout). These borders are usually in need of repair any way. Vacuum up mess.
5. Clean bathtub with industial cleaner, rinse and wet sand (120 grit) to remove any paint or calcium deposits. Wipe tub dry.
6. Acid wash tub with hydrofloric acid. Let this sit 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse with cold water and wet sand tub (120 grit). Wipr tub dry.
7. Use your compressor or shop vac to blow dry borders of tub, over flow hole and drain. I tape rubber gloves over the shower head and tub spout to make sure no moisture gets on the tub after it is complety dry.
8. Use body filler and lightly fill entire bottom and top ledges of tub. Depending on how much acid damage ther is to the tub you may have to repeat this process 2 or 3 times to adequetly fill damaged areas. TRY TO BE NEAT! It is easier to apply body fillers than sand them off!
9. Using 18" masking paper, mask borders of tub and ENTIRE bath floor. Mask everything else in room with plastic sheeting. Make sure paper is properly attached especially to floor. Your worst nightmare will be your masking blowing around or coming off the floor as you are spraying. Also putting paper around the tub and on the floor will enable you to keep the tub/room cleaner as particles will stick to plastic.
* CARDINAL RULE: If you think you should cover it, COVER IT!
10. Sand you body filler smooth. Vacuum room completely. Tack cloth entire tub surface. The tub is now ready to reglaze.
11. Primer your tub (epoxy product prefferd) and let dry according to companies specs.
12. Tack cloth entire surface again and apply top coat according to companies specs.
* In the time it takes you to clean your spray gun, get out of your spray suit and put your compressor away, your venilation system should now have the room vented out enough to enter and remove the majority of the masking, leaving only the masking around the top of the tub. Remove your ventilation system.
* Let the tub sit over night. Return the next afternoon and replace the plumbing fixtures you removed and regrout or recaulk the tub borders.
