Filler strips may be used to close a gap between the wall and first cabinet. Its partly aesthetics, and more importantly, to keep debris from accumulating in an inaccessible crevice. If you don't want the filler, don't put it in. The space may give you a good place to use mousetraps or insect bait. Just kidding, Keep in mind it may be a difficult space to keep clean.
