3 way switch

Posted by Jeff on October 31st, 2003 10:25 AM

I want to install a light/fan fixture, which has seperate wiring for each,to 3 way switches. The fixture is at the end of the run of the supply line (14-2). I've chosen double combination device 3 way switches to save wall space & to allow for the independant operation of the fan or light from either entry. I have 14-3 to run between the swithces. I wired the light fixture first & it worked fine. I followed the same process for the fan & now they both (light & fan) run together only, not independantly. This is how I wired the light fixture: from supply line white to white of light. from supply line black to white (coded for hot) to dark screw of first 3 way switch. blue line from light to black line of 14-3 connected to second switch dark screw. My red & white lines of the 14-3 go between the two switches to the light screws of the 3 way switch. It all worked fine, able to turn the light on & off from any direction. As I'd indicted, I did the same for the fan, but it won't run independantly, where did I go wrong?
