Huh, I would think that a shower stall in a 14 yr old home would certainly have a trap, and yes, the water in the trap keeps sewer gases from entering the home. The gas should move upwards through the plumbing system to be vented (usually) outside.

A smell can also come from material trapped in a clogged pipe. Decomposition can create some memorable odors! See if there is any clog in the pipe using a snake.
