Susan, there are all sorts of hangers available and the weight of the picture or other item will determine if you can hang the item without making holes of some kind. A visit to a good craft store or home center will show you to a big variety of hangers and the "glue-on" ones will probably be OK for the weight of most of your pictures. Heavier pictures will require small nail holes and some really heavy items, like mirrors or large hangings, may even need Moly bolts or need to be put into a stud inside the wall. But, again, most probably will not require this. You will want to have some idea of the weight involved and the packaging for the hangers will show the allowable weight for each hanger.
