Replacing joists/some redundancy for impact. Posted by Daniel E. Fall on November 3rd, 2003 09:49 PM In reply to tricky rotted floor joist by Rob on November 3rd, 2003 03:45 PM [Go to top of thread]
This is a pretty serious problem Rob with no easy solution.
The wall of your house is pretty heavy and you won't be able to jack it up through conventional means.
The way it should be done is professionally by a house mover/erecting company.
They would come in and jack up the house slowly and use solid beams to rest the house on while it was being lifted.
It is extremely dangerous, house movers die in their profession nearly every year as a result of a miscalculation and a house falling on them.
The cost for raising a house is typically a few thousand dollars for the type of work you are discussing.
The problem you will find attempting to do this yourself is that you don't have/can't acquire the proper equipment and when you start lifting, with your equipment and limited knowledge (no offense, I share this attribute), you will start breaking stuff. If you crack a healthy joist, you'll end up with more of the same. The sad truth is that joist should have been sistered long ago before it got spongy.
Sorry to discourage you, I'm an ardent DIYer, but this one is outside your scope, call some house movers for help. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
